UMT – Fassett by Lynn Mead

Fassett is a tangle I haven’t done for a long time and I had forgotten how much I liked it. So I thank Laura for choosing it for the first challenge of this month. I was able to do two tiles using this tangle because one night I couldn’t sleep so I did the second tile at the inhumane hour of 2 a.m. earlier this week.

The first tile turned out a bit busy but after considering it for awhile I decided it was rather party-like:

1st tile - Fassett, Knightsbridge, Flux, Mooka and Tipple

1st tile – Fassett, Knightsbridge, Flux, Mooka and Tipple

Here is the midnight hour tile – it’s a monotangle of Fassett and I think I like using the clumped triangles better than the lined up triangles. I like the star-like effect one gets when the triangles are random.

So that’s it for this week – and you can bet your favorite pen that I am congratulating myself for publishing three weeks in a row! Tangle on, my friends. 🙂

Two weeks in a row! WhooHoo – I’m on a roll! I was able to get a good start on this Diva Challenge this week as I started it at Tangle Time Tuesday at the Menasha Public Library. Thanks to Linda, Sharon, Don, Andy, Jane, Jean and Ann for joining me there.

This challenge offered by guest blogger Jane Reiter, CZT is called the Stacked Bijou Challenge. We were to start with a Bijou tile (2″ square) and consecutively increase each larger square by 1″ ending with a 7″ square. This took more time than one would imagine, but when they are put together they create a pretty impressive sight. I think I may want to do another one.

From the outside in I used Rick’s Paradox, Poke Leaf, Akoya, Chainging, Archer and Aquafleur. (Instructions for all these tangles can be found at TanglePatterns.com) I can’t tell you why I decided to add red accents as I usually don’t add color at all. Next time I may use tan tiles for the stack and then use the black, brown and white pens – that would be cool.

Time to get on with the day – tangle on, my friends!

Due to the snow I have some time to post my answer to the Diva’s Challenge this week. The challenge was to create a monotangle using Shattuck – a tangle I use often.  For the first tile I attempted a Hollibaugh-type use of Shattuck, but it got away from me, as sometimes happens. The second tile has a whimsical feel to it as I used some Mooka strands to encompass the Shattuck tangle.

On the second tile, I experimented with a new chop – can you see it? I don’t know if I will continue to use it or not.

Tangle on, my friends!

Zentangle classes

Just finished up a series of classes that took place on the Oshkosh FVTC campus. This 6 class series started with the basics and moved on to build on those basic skills using different colored tiles, pens, and more intricate tangles. Below are some photos of what these talented students created.

1st class - 1/27 - Tangles are Static, Crescent Moon, Knightsbridge, Dyon, and Printemps

1st class – 1/27 – Tangles are Static, Crescent Moon, Knightsbridge, Dyon, and Printemps

2nd class - 2/3/15 Tangles included Squill, Cubine, Snail, and Keeko. They added one more of their choosing.

3rd class 2/10/15. For a Valentine related tile we created borders on a 3.5 tile and inserted a Bijou tile with stylized heart tangle. They turned out quite lovely.

Last class and special project. We created holders for the 3.5 inch tiles on which we created monotangles. Tangles were Betweed, Ixorus, and Marasu. We hinged the tile holders together to form a book of sorts. Aren't they the coolest!

The new year has overwhelmed me and I haven’t been keeping up with the Diva’s Challenges since before the holidays. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been tangling at all, however!

First of all, I have a wonderful 2015 Tangle-A-Day Calendar that I have been striving to keep current:

image (1)

I love the feel of the pages in this calendar and the inspiration art work that Carole Ohl has included is, well, inspiring! :)Some of the illustrations include how she composes a tile – a step-out of tile composition, so to speak. Carole’s tangling is intricate and graceful and beautiful. You can order your own from a link on her blog here – Open Seed Arts.

So here is what I’ve done for the first two weeks or page spreads –

I’m just warming up here, folks. On the 6th, I “messed up” Crosco – so I will have to try that again. I really prefer to follow the step-outs as they are the first time I try a tangle and then mess around with tangleations. This time my Crosco is a definite tangleation (some may say mistake, but, of course, there are no mistakes in Zentangle).

When I need to play catch up, as I did for the 10th – 11th – 12th, you will see the tangles spread out and relaxing over several days. Tangles that need sprawling space in order to show well are great to use when time is not on my side – it’s really not a bad thing to have to catch up sometimes. Over these three days I’ve used Poke Root, Knightsbridge, Ing, Punzel, Inapod, and just some filler marks.

In addition, I’ve done two tiles using the featured tangle for the Facebook group Square One. Each Friday a tangle is chosen to feature on our submitted tiles. Last week was one of my favorites – ‘Nzeppel. I posted the first tile on FB, but the second one I just did for my own entertainment one evening. Truly it looks better at a distance.

Here I’ve used Shard, ‘Nzeppel and Tipple. All step-outs can be found at TanglePatterns.

Beside tangling for my own pleasure, I’ve been planning my new series of classes that will be held through Fox Valley Technical College at Clintonville, Appleton, and Oshkosh campuses this semester. The Oshkosh class begins in less than two weeks! Can’t wait to meet the folks who want to learn or continue with creating beautiful Zentangle tiles. The Appleton, Clintonville and the second session in Oshkosh all start the last week in March. I hope to meet and inspire many new enthusiasts through these classes.

I am also putting together a series of special classes that will be given at Atlas. Some of the ideas I’m considering are focus on botanical tangles, tangling for special days, creating Zendalas, and working on monograms as illustrated by these tiles made for me by my sister, Cari. These were done on the adorable Bijou tiles – 2″ squares. Love it!image (9)

If you have any ideas for classes that you would be interested in, please email your suggestions. Until then, consider registering for the Zentangle – Basics and Beyond at your FVTC location of your choice and . . .

Tangle on, my friends.

Arukas – Diva Challenge # 197

Tags

Arukas is the newest official tangle generated from the latest Certification Seminars in Providence RI. This tangle fully embraces the repetitive aspects for the “zen” experience.

After much wrestling with this comparatively new laptop I have, I have managed to scan the two tiles I’ve created for this challenge. I am really not enjoying the learning curve for this thing I’m working on. I think I need a shift in attitude and then it will all be good – Ha!

Here they are Arukas 1 and Arukas 2:

So I haven’t blogged much – that’s an understatement, I know. So I thought I might show a few of the things I’ve been experimenting with.

I tried the 3-D ornaments using Zentangle tiles:

I also had been approached about tangling on the globe ornaments – here are some that I created doing that. The roundness made tangling a bit tricky.

Here are some tiles that used a tree shaped string – ’tis the season, you know. You can see my first attempt at the new official tangle Arukas as background on one tile. I will need to play around with that one a bit more.

Thanks for looking in on what I’ve been up to lately. One last thing, if you live in my area, registration for FVTC classes are open. I am offering 6 week Zentangle classes in Appleton, Clintonville and Oshkosh. Go to the “Scheduled classes” link at the top of this page for more info.

Tangle on, my friends!

All Dolled Up! – – – Diva Challenge #196

Tags

, , ,

Yes, I know it has been awhile since I’ve posted here. The past month and a half seemed to be extremely busy and just zoomed by. I did do some tangling – but not nearly as much as I would like to do. First I will share how I met the current Diva Challenge #196:

image

Tangles used are Gneiss, Quare, Maelstrom, Tami and Gnarly.  So this “doll” isn’t so dolled up, but she seems more like an action figure. Is she beckoning? Halting? Hailing? I guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder.

I will get this posted and then put up another post of some other tiles I have done and a few other surprises and announcements.

Take care – have a good, good, weekend and tangle on, my friends

Diva Challenge #189

This week’s challenge from the Diva is a UMT (Use My Tangle) – read about it at the link provided. The tangle is called Yuma and it is a fun one to play around with. I plan on doing some more playing, but thought I should get this into a blog before the time has passed. (That happens all too often for me.)

This tile offers Vega, Yuma and some Tipple:

This week I also taught my first Renaissance tile class – here are the tiles created by my students in Oshkosh and Clintonville:

My apologies for cutting off the tiles on each end. Our series of classes is coming to an end – only one more class left. See the “Scheduled Classes” link for information about upcoming classes.

Have a wonderful week and tangle on, my friends.

Choices – Choices

Tags

,

The Diva’s Challenge, posted last Monday, had us choosing two tangles that begin with our initials. So the completed tile would be a duotangle. As Laura suggested, I went to TanglePatterns.com to look at the tangles that start with the letters “C” and “S.” Each letter has three “pages” of tangles – way too many choices. So I came up with a plan – working backwards in time I would look at the most recently posted tangles on the TanglePatterns site and use the first ones I came across that started with my two initials. The first one I came upon was Sprigs by Michele Beauchamps. Looking a little further down the line I found Chi by Cynthia Gannon. So I made my attempt at both and here it is —-

That was fun and I decided to do another one. This time I used Shard and Coaster – both tangles given to us by Carole Ohl – the links will bring you to her blog – Open Seed Arts – and the steps for doing Shard and Coaster. Carole has a list of tangles she gives directions for on the left side of her blog – some of them are my favorites.

I met Carole when attending CZT Seminar #7 in October 2011. Speaking of CZT Seminar #7, Michele Beauchamp (Sprigs) was also an attendee as was Linda Farmer (TanglePatterns). Wasn’t I with incredibly inspiring artists?

I really enjoyed this challenge and will remember this the next time I need a direction to go with choosing tangles for a tile – there are many other initials I could use.

Until next time, tangle on, my friends.
